Nanzan University Center for Linguistics

Since its establishment in 2003, the Nanzan Center for Linguistics has been pursuing collaborative research in comparative syntax and language acquisition with many research institutions in Asia, the United States, and Europe.

Directions from the Airport and from Stations

The Center for Linguistics is currently conducting an international collaborative research project on comparative syntax and language acquisition with a generous research grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science. In 2008~2010, it achieved concrete theoretical results from comparative syntax of Japanese with other Asian languages, such as Chinese, Korean, Turkish, and Malayalam. The scope of comparison is now broadened to include Romance, Germanic, and Slavic languages.

Details of the project

GLOW in Asia offers a forum for advanced research in theoretical linguistics. The first conference took place in Hyderabad, India in 1998 as a special meeting of GLOW (in Europe). At the second conference at Nanzan in 1999, GLOW in Asia was formally established as an organization independent from and yet in close relation with GLOW (in Europe). Since then, it held conferences in Taiwan (2002), Korea (2003), Hong Kong (2007), India (2005, 2009), and China (2010). The next meeting will be in Mie, Japan (September 4-6, 2012).
