If you want to be a good tennis player, what will you do? Will you just read a book to learn how to grip a racket, how to hit a ball, how to keep score, etc? Probably NOT. I believe you will practice again and again in order to improve your skill. Then, let me ask you what you should do if you want to be a good English speaker. Do you think it is enough just to read books? Probably, NOT. You should practice again and again.
The NEEC (Nanzan English Education Center) offers you tremendous opportunities to practice English. The NEEC's experienced Language Instructors teach you regular English courses at Nanzan University. Our student assistants help you practice English at our renowned World Plaza between 11:00 and 18:00 from Monday to Friday. We are proud to be an essential part of Nanzan University's far-famed English education. Come and visit us! I am looking forward to meeing you at the NEEC.

The best kind of learning takes place in a social environment, and that is what you’ll find at the NEEC’s World Plaza. By practicing your English outside of class in our foreign language only environment, you’ll be able to enhance not only your language skills but also your connections with people. Come to the World Plaza. Be active in your learning. Your passport awaits.

My advice for students is to find something you love doing. This could be something you love to learn about and study, but it might not be. It could be something you do as a part time job, or a club you join at school, or volunteering in your community. Whatever it is, find it and stick to it. It may lead you places you never expect and bring you joys you couldn’t have imagined. Another side of that for university students is to find something in your studies to enjoy. You may have difficult classes, but always look for some part you find interesting or fun, and you will find that the classes will be easier for you and you’ll learn more. I love reading and believe one really good way to learn and practice a new language is to read a lot in that language. Here at Nanzan we have lots of fun, interesting and easy books. If you find ones you enjoy and then read them, you'll improve your English easily!

I've been a teacher all my adult life, about 20 years now in both The USA and Japan.
I absolutely love my job and I enjoy the interaction with my students very much.
When you see me on campus, please just call me Chris and feel free to ask me questions.
I have a lot of advice about improving your English but I would like to choose one point that the other NEEC teachers didn't talk about. I highly recommend keeping a vocabulary notebook or word cards, and reviewing those as often as possible.
For example, study on the train or between classes. I do this myself with learning Japanese and you'll be amazed at how much just 15-20 minutes a day can improve your English. Try it!
Good luck and see you around campus :)

coming to the World Plaza you have a chance to practice your English as
well as meet others who also wish to improve their communication skills.

In order to learn for the future, not just today, it is important to take charge of your own learning. We at the NEEC want to help you build the skills to do that, through meaningful English communication. Please come and join us and develop your own autonomy as a learner for life.

You may have heard the saying "If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again". In language learning this kind of persistence is key. There may be times when you feel like giving up, but don't; instead come and talk to us at the NEEC or join in the many exciting activities that will be taking place at the World Plaza. I guarantee that you will soon be motivated and feel like try, try and trying again.

I have just returned to Japan after living in Portland Oregon for two years. (Japan has changed in one respect during that time: I notice the coffee shops have bigger 'no smoking' sections. Hurray!) I look forward to meeting you all and working with you in discovering English, and your own very personal way of expressing yourselves through it. See you soon.

The NEEC (Nanzan English Education Center) World Plaza offers students so many opportunities to practice your English with other language learners, meet people from around the world, and learn about other cultures and countries. Please come by and chat with other students and the NEEC teachers about your future goals and interests. I'm positive there is something at the World Plaza for everyone!

Small children know a few words, but they can express a great many
meanings. College students in Japan know a lot of words, but they don't
have enough experience expressing themselves. Therefore, to get better
what you need to do is practice, practice, practice! You could go to
Kyoto, and try to talk to some tourists. But why not just come into the
World Plaza and talk with your friends! It is good practice. Also, how
about talking to your teacher after class or in the hall? The more you
talk the better you'll get.
