南山大学　英語教育センター

名古屋キャンパスでは2007年度、NEEC（Nanzan English Education Center）という組織を開設しました。
ここでは、名古屋キャンパスの学部生が受講する共通教育科目の英語（必修・選択必修・選択）を提供するプログラムを企画・運営しています。学生の英語運用能力に応じたクラス編成をし、効果的な学習ができる環境を提供しています。また英語教育を専門とする多くの専任教員と非常勤教員が、学生の専攻やモチベーションを意識しながら授業を運営しています。教員からの一方通行の教育ではなく、学生からの積極的なインプットを促すような双方向の授業を目指しています。
教室の中でも外でも学生のみなさんの学習意欲に応えられる－それが南山大学の英語教育なのです。

After the rainy season in Japan there is an official “bug season” or insect season. This is when the mosquitoes become even more common and many of the other insects like beetles and cicadas start appearing. One day one of them found a way into my house. In the early morning I woke up to a sharp pain in my hand. I sat up and checked my hand. It felt numb so I thought that maybe I had accidentally slept on it. But as I started to become more awake and alert, the pain felt more like a bee sting. I got up and ran some cold water on my hand and looked at carefully. There was a red mark on it and the area around it was sweating. I had definitely been bitten by something. Then I was nervous because my wife was still asleep and the bug could still be in the bed. I carefully looked around the bedroom but didn’t find anything. Then I picked up my pillow and to my horror I saw a 10cm centipede (むかで). It looked dead, so I quickly scooped it with some tissues and threw it away. Since my hand hurt and I had heard that centipedes were poisonous, I woke up my wife. She checked the Internet to see what I should do. One website said that centipede poison could kill small children. That didn’t make me feel better. Another website recommended running my hand under hot water, as hot as possible, and to clean it with shampoo. Apparently some chemical in the shampoo helps get rid of the poison. For 10 minutes I left my hand in hot water and cleaned it several times with shampoo. Amazingly enough, the technique worked. The pain was not nearly as bad. I still felt like I had been bitten and the area felt a bit strange. Then my wife noticed that the centipede was still alive, and that it was crawling out of the waste basket. Before I could decide how to deal with it, my wife attacked the centipede with chopsticks and dropped it into a bucket of hot water. Our early morning visitor was dead. Now I check the bed for bugs and lift up my pillow several times before going to sleep. The weather is turning cooler too, so I think this year’s bug season is over. I certainly hope so.
