「2005年9月12日から15日までの4日間、南山大学にて、日豪両国の国際関係を取り上げるワークショップが行われた。......テーマは「9.11事件以降の世界における公平と平和を求めて――日本とオーストラリアのためのオルターナティブを構想して」であり、議論の前提となっていたのは、両国の置かれている状況が、例えば、米国との関係、対テロ戦争、アジアとの関わりなどの点で非常に類似しているという理解であった。ワークショップの目的は、アジア太平洋地域と世界の安全およびより公平な国際秩序形成に、日本とオーストラリアがより効果的に貢献できる道を探ることであった。
...このワークショップの議論の過程で、日本の憲法第九条が度々話題に上り、憲法改正に関する問題が熱心に、また深く話し合われた。......そこで、憲法第九条に関連する議論のみを取り出してまとめ、憲法改正に関する政策決定の過程に直接関与する人々（国会議員および一般市民）に発信することにした。」(「前書き」より)

「ワークショップ中、オーストラリアからの参加者2名(ミカーリス・マイケルとラリー・マーシャル)は議論の内容、特にその要点を記録するという役割を担い、ワークショップ後はその記録をワークショップの報告書としてまとめた。その報告書は「Securing the Region Post-September 11」という題名でオーストラリアのラトローブ大学社会科学部の政治プログラムによって2005年12月に発行された。／本報告書は「Securing the Region Post-September 11」に基づいて作成されている。まず「Securing the Region Post-September 11」が中野涼子によって日本語に翻訳された。さらにそれに対してマイケル・シーゲルが日本の読者を対象に重要だと思われる内容を加筆し、ワークショップ参加者と南山大学社会倫理研究所のスタッフと共同で推敲を行って本報告書を現在の形にした。／本報告書の目的は、ワークショップでの議論の内容、特にワークショップ中に浮き彫りにされた問題意識およびワークショップにおける報告や議論から生まれた提言をできるだけ包括的かつ簡潔に提供することである。」(「前書き」より)

“From September 12 to September 15, 2006, a Joint Australia-Japan Workshop was held at Nanzan University, Nagoya, Japan. The workshop brought together senior scholars and experts to discuss the international relations of Japan and Australia, especially in the context of developments since September 11, 2001. ...The discussion was premised on the understanding that the situation of the two countries is remarkably similar (e.g. relations with the United States, the war on terror, engagement with Asia). The goal of the workshop was to explore ways in which Japan and Australia might more effectively contribute to regional and global security and a more equitable world order. … In the course of the workshop, the question of Article 9 of Japan’s constitution came up frequently and the question of constitutional change was discussed intently and in depth. … The decision was made therefore to pull together the threads of the discussion that related to Article 9 and to disseminate the resulting paper, most importantly, to those who will have a direct role in the decision-making process regarding changes in the constitution: the members of the Diet, and more broadly the Japanese public.” ――Preface

“The Nanzan symposium brought together distinguished scholars, representatives of civil society groups and other experts from Australia, Japan and other Asian countries to consider the future of the Asia-Pacific region. The context for these discussions included globalisation, the 'war of terror', alliances with the world's sole superpower, and their place in Asia. The aim was to:

• consider alternatives to global and regional insecurity
• propose workable long-term alternatives, rather than short-term palliatives.
